Chelsea legend Petr Cech has joined Elite League side Belfast Giants on loan, four years after retiring from professional football.

Former Chelsea and Arsenal goalkeeper Cech has joined Elite League Ice Hockey side Belfast Giants on loan from Oxford City Stars. Cech joined Oxford in June 2022 after leaving his role as technical director at the Blues. His team plays in the National Ice Hockey League, which is a tier below the Elite League.

After retiring from professional football in 2019, the 41-year-old plied his trade with Guildford Phoenix and Chelmsford Chieftains. Cech, who plays as a netminder – equivalent to a goalkeeper in football – recently made 62 saves for Oxford against Streatham Red Hawks in a NIHL Division 1 South match.

Upon signing the legendary goalkeeper, Belfast Giants coach Adam Keefe said: "Petr is a highly decorated athlete, who knows what it takes to perform at the highest level. We're very appreciative of the support of both the Oxford City Stars and Petr himself. His support during this loan period will be invaluable."
WHAT NEXT
Belfast Giants are currently fifth in the ongoing EIHL 2023/24 season with 10 points from their first nine matches. Cech, who won four Premier League titles and the Champions League at Chelsea, could make his debut when Belfast Giants take on Sheffield Steelers on Saturday.
