According to The Sun on Sunday (09/09, page 63) West Brom and Nottingham Forest are battling for the signature of free-agent Bakary Sako, and Baggies boss Darren Moore must secure the 30-year-old to add depth to his squad.
What’s the story?
The Baggies had a shaky first couple of games back in the Championship, but recent performances and results have seen them climb to ninth in the table with three wins, one draw and two losses from their first six league games.
Moore, who was named as manager on a permanent basis earlier in the summer, made eight signings this summer and the attacking additions of Dwight Gayle and youngster Harvey Barnes look to be shrewd loan signings.
Barnes plays in a similar role to the 6ft tall Sako on the left-wing or behind a striker and has two goals and one assist in his first eight games for the Baggies after making a blistering start to life at the Hawthorns. Sako would still be a fantastic signing though to add depth to Moore’s squad.
Bargain deal
Sako remains a free-agent after leaving Crystal Palace in the summer, where he rejected a new contract, according to Football.London.
The Mali international, who has four goals in nine caps for his country, has previous experience in the Championship with Wolves, where he scored 24 times across two seasons in England’s second division.
Sako is a powerful and pacy winger but he could also be used by Moore in the role behind the two strikers or upfront with a partner in Moore’s current 3-4-1-2 formation. With youngsters Oliver Burke and Johnathan Leko currently the only real backup for these positions, Moore would be well placed to offer Sako a good amount of game time and also a mentoring role for his emerging young talent.
